Opportunities for Medical Students
Our department is involved in programs that offer exposure and access to resources and mentorship for medical students interested in neurosurgery; opportunities are available for medical students enrolled at UCSF or other U.S. medical schools.
Visiting Elective Scholarship Program
This program was established to encourage fourth year medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (UIM) or are interested in working and conducting research with diverse populations to apply for a clinical elective rotation at UCSF. Each scholarship is $2000, will be reimbursed at the end of the rotation, and can cover visiting elective fees, transportation and lodging fees.
UCSF Medical Student Programs
We have several programs for UCSF medical students, which are not targeted to UIM students necessarily, but offer additional exposure to neurosurgical specialties, along with access to resources and mentorship for those interested in neurosurgery.
UCSF Muriel Steele Society
The Muriel Steele Society (MSS) was established in honor of Muriel Steele, MD, the first woman surgeon at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). MSS is dedicated to inspiring, supporting, and promoting women surgeons, residents, and medical students.
