Observership Program

This program is for short-term international scholars (MDs or PhDs) visiting to observe in the OR or clinic. 

How to Apply

Interested applicants should reach out to the physician they are interested in observing with their CV and three letters of recommendation. If the physician is interested in hosting the observer, the faculty will then send it to the department for approval. Department approval is required before the application process can proceed. Applicants will be contacted with further instructions.

Additional Details

  • Visit duration must not exceed 90 days and the visitor must obtain a B1 visa on their own
  • GME approval required (GME requires visiting scholar packet to be received 45 days in advance of visit start date)
  • Department processing fee of $425

 

Research Program

This program is for international scholars who wish to conduct research with a faculty member in the UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery. It is intended for undergraduate or graduate students (who must be enrolled in their home institution during their visit), MDs, or PhDs. 

How to Apply

Interested applicants should reach out to the faculty member they are interested in conducting research with, and provide their CV and three letters of recommendation. If the faculty member is interested in hosting the observer, he/she will then send it to the department for approval. Department approval is required before the application process can proceed. Applicants will be contacted with further instructions.

Additional Details

  • Individuals must meet the appropriate appointment guidelines before their visitor application is approved
  • Applications are processed within Human Resources Service Center and International Scholars Office, which takes about 4 months to process
  • If the program will involve clinical observation, then GME approval required (GME requires visiting scholar packet to be received 45 days in advance of visit start date)
  • Visa and Academic Appointment required ($650 visa fee)
  • Department processing fee of $425 (if visitor is going to observe in the OR as well, this fee covers that paperwork process)
