Brain and Spinal Injury

Neurotrauma clinical care and research is based at the Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, a central hospital for the Bay Area and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the City and County of San Francisco. ZSFGH was the first hospital to earn certification in traumatic brain injury from the Joint Commission in recognition of excellence in this specialty.

BASIC is one of the largest programs in the nation focused on translational research for traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Faculty from the Department of Neurological Surgery lead the NIH-funded TRACK-TBI and TRACK-SCI studies. These prospective, longitudinal studies focus on collecting and analyzing detailed clinical data on subjects at medical institutions across the U.S., along with CT/MRI imaging, blood biospecimens, and detailed clinical outcomes. These and other large-scale, multi-instiution data collection projects are performed in partnership with industry, philanthropy, and government and aim to transform the classification and treatment of patients with devestating CNS injuries. Both multi-center and investigator-initiated clinical trials take place at ZSFGH.

Laboratories specializing preclinical modeling of brain and spinal cord injury focus on the biology of these injuries and the development of therapeutic strategies to promote regeneration and repair. BASIC is also home to a strong bioinformatics group with a focus on analyzing big data collected from multiple consortia and developing common data elements (CDEs) that can be used to standardize metrics across studies. The BASIC clinical research core is home to the new UCSF Critical Care Data Warehouse and is one of the 11 hubs for the new nationwide NIH-funded Neurological Emergencies Trials Network. BASIC investigators are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, Department of Defense, National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and numerous foundations.
