Year 1 (PGY1)
All roations during the PGY-1 year are under the direction of the Neurological Surgery Residency Program Director (Nicholas Barbaro, MD). The PGY-1 year includes 1 month each of:
• trauma (SFGH)
• vascular surgery (M/L)
• otolaryngology (M/L)
• intensive care medicine (SFGH)
Neurology rotations include:
• 1 month at SFGH, where acute-care management is stressed;
• 1 month on the UCSF neurovascular service (M/L), where residents interact with the endovascular radiology division and acquire early technical skills; and
• 1 elective month, where residents may choose from among the following subspecialty services: neuromuscular, memory and aging, epilepsy, ALS, and child neurology.
The other 5 months of the PGY-1 year are devoted to clinical neurosurgery and include:
• 2 months of neurosurgical trauma (SFGH)
• 1 month of radiosurgery and radiation oncology (M/L)
• 1 month of neuroendocrinology(M/L)
• 1 month with the neurosurgery hospitalist service (M/L)
