Adjunct Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery

Senior Manager, Genentech, Inc.

Dr. Sorani is a Senior Manager at Genentech, Inc. and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF. His research areas include biomarker discovery, outcomes research, clinical trials, computational characterization of genetic variation and gene expression, systems biology, and pharmacogenomics. His focus areas include the analysis of large data sets of genetic, gene expression, protein and clinical biomarkers in neurotrauma and neurodegenerative diseases. He has also developed database infrastructure and operational processes to support integrated biomarker discovery and has functioned as a liaison between clinical, experimental and informatics communities.

Previously, Dr. Sorani worked as an informatics professional with expertise in computational biology research and consulting, as well as software entrepreneurship, development, and project management. He was co-founder and vice president of product management at SSB Technologies, Inc. as well as a senior information technology manager at Oracle Corporation. He began his career as a management consultant at Ernst & Young and Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). He holds a B.S.E. in Operations Research from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Biological & Medical Informatics from the University of California, San Francisco, where he trained under co-advisors Dr. Geoffrey Manley and Dr. Kathleen Giacomini and investigated the role of genetic variation in aquaporin-4 on physiological and therapeutic response after brain injury. As a graduate student, he was also the recipient of an NIH (NINDS) Kirchstein pre-doctoral fellowship and an American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics presidential trainee award.
