Faculty and Staff Initiatives

Multiple initiatives are aimed at increasing diversity within our faculty and staff, while also improving services for our increasingly diverse patient population. 

Neurosurgery Diversity Committee

The Neurosurgery Diversity Committee is dedicated to the recruitment, retention, and growth of diversity within our department. Several ongoing initiatives are directed at improving services for our diverse patient population:

  • Neurosurgery Employee Interpreter Certification: Bilingual staff will be registered for training and certification to increase inclusion and expand communication with patients and their families
  • Translate patient education content into Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese

This committee is led by Doris Wang, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurological Surgery. 

Women in Neurosurgery Group

Ongoing priorities for the Women in Neurosurgery Group include the following:

  • Space Renovation Initiatives:
    • Resident Call Room: Separate male and female call rooms/space for both residents and sub-interns
    • Locker Room at Parnassus and new hospital: Ensure adequate space, same accessibility, lactation space
  • Invite diverse Grand Rounds speakers
  • Organize resident / medical student outreach 
  • Promote work-life balance
  • Hold team-building events

Mission: BRAIN

Mission: BRAIN (Bridging Resources and Advancing International Neurosurgery) is a nonprofit organization with the goal of providing neurosurgical expertise and resources to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in underserved areas throughout the world. This neurosurgical teaching mission has completed 5 missions to Guadalajara, Mexico, Mexico City, and Manila, Philippines. Neurosurgery residents, faculty, nurses, and students participate in these mission trips, providing unique opportunities to care for patients outside of the American hospital environment and gain new perspectives on the practice of neurosurgery in other cultures.
